How to graduate to business How to graduate to business Youve spent the past three or four years writing essays and reports, and now youre in your first professional job and ready to start writing for business. But does your degree have you covered? Well, yes and no, writes Cathy Relf. The good news is that because youve developed good analytical and organisational skills, youll be well versed in sorting your ideas into separate sections or chapters, and supporting your arguments with facts, figures and evidence. The bad news is that the style and structure of academic writing varies hugely from the style and structure youll need to adopt for professional business writing. Whereas academic writing tends to be wordy, expansive and, well, a little dull, business writing needs to be lively, straight to the point and immediately engaging. Follow these three steps to shake off the academic shackles and bring out your business voice. 1. Engage your reader immediately The biggest difference between writing for university and writing for work is that, at work, no ones obliged to be interested. Interested though they surely were, your lecturers were paid to read your essays. However verbose the style or tenuous the argument, they had to pay attention to every sentence on every page, right through to the bitter end. In the professional world, no one will do that unless you hook them in at the start and keep them interested. You have to earn and then retain your readers attention at every step. Luckily, theres a radical yet simple change you can make that will instantly improve your ability to engage the reader. At university, you probably laid out all your evidence and information first, and followed them with a conclusion at the end. In business, you generally need to get to the point right at the start youre not discussing the topic, youre offering your expert opinion and backing it up with hard evidence. Heres a simple, four-point formula for grabbing your readers attention and getting straight down to business. a) Outline the context Establish the common ground between you and your reader, in no more than a line or two. b) Describe the trigger Explain why you are writing this now. What is it that has changed or must change? Again, keep this to just a line, two at the maximum. c) Ask a question Raise an action-orientated question, such as How do we prevent this?, How do we prepare for this? or How do we reduce the cost of this? d) Give the answer Answer the question with your recommendation or key finding, giving a complete solution in no more than 25 words. Now you have their attention. Use the rest of your document to explain how and why you have arrived at this recommendation. 2. Take your brain for a pint Remember all those student nights you spent trying to make your words of wisdom heard above the combined noise of a bad DJ, 30 drunken friends and the call of tequila? They werent wasted. The rest of your document should comprise organised sections or chapters that back up the recommendation you made in step 1. Before you start writing each section, imagine you had 30 seconds to tell it to a friend in a noisy pub. Itll help you do the following three things naturally: a) Use everyday words and as few as possible The more directly your reader can understand you, the better. So cross out ameliorate, expeditious, and promulgate and replace them with improve, fast and issue. And do you really need to say in order to, rather than to? Could you cut down in the field of to in? Is eliminate altogether really more effective than just eliminate? Go through your draft and remove any words that arent pulling their weight. The clearer your writing is, the clearer your message. b) Be active, not passive As a general rule, use active verbs, rather than passive. It keeps your writing lively, direct, personal and accountable. Just put the doer at the start of the sentence. So instead of writing it is hoped that the project will be completed in December, write we hope to complete the project in December. c) Prefer verbs to nouns Verbs are more direct than nouns. So when youre editing your work, cut out nominalisations such as achieve cost reductions and undertake the implementation of and replace them with reduce costs and implement or, simply, do. 3. Focus on your formatting Good formatting can make such a difference to the clarity of your document. There are few things as off-putting as pages of block text. Well-formatted text is kinder on the eye, easier to navigate and more memorable. a) Keep it short and simple Dont try to cram too much into your sentences. Break them down so that each sentence deals with just one idea, and link your ideas logically. Its fine to start a sentence with and or but if it helps clarify your message. Similarly, its not unusual to see suffocatingly long paragraphs in academic writing. But in business writing, youll need to be more succinct. Vary the length of your paragraphs, but try not to go beyond five sentences in each. And if you have a particularly important sentence, dont be shy of giving it a paragraph all to itself. b) Use engaging headings and sub-headings Use regular, clear headings and sub-headings to break up the text. Avoid label-style headings, and instead use explicit ones that sum up the section. This helps the reader find sections most appropriate to them, and also makes it easy for them to refer back to relevant sections later. c) Put a bullet in it When youre writing a list of points that can speak for themselves, use bullets or numbers. They will stand out much better than if you cram them all into a paragraph of text, and its easier on the readers eye. d) Would a graph work better? When writing about data, figures and processes, ask yourself whether a graph, pie chart or diagram could communicate the same information more effectively. Keep this checklist handy when youre writing your documents, and soon it will begin to become habit. The witches are the most unsettling example Essay To the most extent I do not agree that the witches are the most unsettling example of the supernatural in Macbeth. There are other factors within the play such as the ambition of Macbeth and the wickedness of Lady Macbeth that cast an eerie and shocking atmosphere over the play. The reason I believe this to be the case because as part of a modern society, we have a lot more psychological horrors, and both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are considered to be insane. Whereas witches are seen more as a fantasy for us; compared to the Jacobean period, where they were considered real. It is evident from the beginning that Macbeth’s fatal flaw is ambition. When the witches tell him that he is going to be king, his mind immediately begins to ponder on the possibilities of killing Duncan, â€Å"My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man†¦Ã¢â‚¬  His ambition is unsettling because it sets of the sequence of events throughout the play that lead to his downfall. Clearly Lady Macbeth is the driving force behind Macbeth’s ambition, because she forces him to overcome his guilt by insulting him, â€Å"And live a coward in thine own esteem, letting I dare not wait upon I would, Like the poor cat I’th’adage? † However once his ambition takes over him, it spirals out of control, leading to more murders to cover up all his wrongdoings, and leads him to being tormented by apparitions and guilt. In the end he doesn’t get the chance to enjoy the â€Å"fruits of his labour† and is beheaded by McDuff. A modern audience would view Macbeth’s actions as maniacal and ridiculous, because he became too obsessed with the idea of becoming King, that it lead to the murder of many people; this ended up being futile because he died in vain anyways. It shows that only some aspects of society have changed since the Jacobean period, rather than society as a whole. However, a Jacobean audience would have found Macbeth’s actions more deplorable. A Jacobean audience at the time would frown upon Lady Macbeth’s behaviour in convincing her husband to commit murder, and use the graphic images that she does. â€Å"Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this† This would have especially shocked Jacobean women, because there were certain morals and taboos that they followed. Women of that period were supposed to be pious, follow religion strongly, be against violence, and had to follow demands made by men. Lady Macbeth goes against all of these morals, but commits the taboos. She would’ve also been seen as malevolent because she gives suggestions that are intended to cause harm to others. â€Å"Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe topfull of direst cruelty†¦Ã¢â‚¬  However, women in today’s society would find Lady Macbeth’s behaviour less disturbing than woman of the Jacobean period because females have become largely independent today compared to the restrictions that were placed upon them in earlier times.

The plot of Much Ado About Nothing is an elaborate network of schemes and tricks. This statement is confirmed throughout Much Ado About Nothing. The play contains many examples of tricks and schemes that are used to manipulate the thoughts and feelings of characters. The major examples of such manipulation include- Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato tricking Benedick into believing that Beatrice loves him, Hero and Ursula trick Beatrice into thinking Benedick is in love with her. The relationship between Claudio and Hero also endures much manipulation. For instance Don John and Borachio trick Claudio and the Prince into believing Hero is unfaithful. As in the tradition of Shakespeare, the Friar deceives everybody into thinking Hero is dead. An instance of trickery involves Benedick being manipulated to believe Beatrice is in love with him. This trickery is carried out playfully by Don Pedro, Leonato and Claudio. They realise Benedick's stubbornness in Act II Scene iii, when he states "ma n is a fool when he dedicates his behaviours to love." Due to this stubbornness Don Pedro, Leonato and Claudio must devise a way of attaining the love amid Benedick and Beatrice. In Act II Scene iii the men accomplish this by way of waiting for Benedick to be within ears reach, then raising the topic of Leonato's niece Beatrice. Don Pedro’s reference about "your niece Beatrice was in love with Signor Benedick." helps to accomplish such manipulation. This scheme is completed when this is overheard by Benedick, and due to his insecurity about love he falls for their trick, thus loving Beatrice. Another example of manipulation that is closely related to the one involving Benedick but Beatrice becomes the focus of the scheme. Like Benedick, Beatrice's feelings about love are strong and opposing. When she states "Not till God make men of some other mettle than earth" she assumes that her desired partner does not exist. Hero and Ursula believe that Benedick would make a good husban d for Beatrice and as a result of this, they plan a scheme to bring about love between Beatrice and Benedick. Hero and Ursula accomplish their scheme in Act III Scene i. Their scheme is concluded by means of discussing that they have heard that Benedick loves Beatrice greatly. Beatrice overhears this and thinks the combination of her and Benedick’s wit and intelligence would make a successful match. Beatrice displays her free will when making this decision.

In 1973, the San Antonio Independent School District filed an appeal to the United States Supreme Court to decide whether or not the state of Texas financed public education in such a way to discriminate against students living in poor school districts.The Supreme Court (1973) held that â€Å"the Texas system does not operate to the peculiar disadvantage of any suspect class.† Although such is the case, the Court also held that education â€Å"is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms† (United States Supreme Court [USSC], 1973). There are, however, factors to consider before such an equal opportunity for students to exist.While believing that education must be made available to all on equal terms, the United States Supreme Court (1973) also believed that â€Å"the history of education since the industrial revolution shows a continual struggle between two forces: the desire by members of society to have educational opportunity for all children, and t he desire of each family to provide the best education it can afford for its own children.† The Texas financial system for public schools is a â€Å"product of the state and local participation† (USSC, 1973).Half of the revenues to provide basic education were derived from state-funded programs and each district aids in financing through taxes on properties within the district's jurisdiction. The appellees claim that Texas' reliance on local property taxation discriminates poor families who reside in districts having low generation of property tax.The United States Supreme Court (1973), however, held that the state of   Texas works its system of school finances such that â€Å"While assuring a basic education for every child in the State, it permits and encourages a large measure of participation in and control of each district's schools at the local level.†It was based on the efforts â€Å"devoted to establishing a means of guaranteeing a minimum statewide ed ucational program without sacrificing the vital element of local participation† and local control means†¦ the freedom to devote more money to the education of one's children† (USSC, 1973).There is no doubt that the United States Supreme Court feel that equalizing the the funds between schools in Texas would make opportunity for students equal as well.However, it held that the financial system has already provided the basic educational requirement and does not believe that the state of Texas is not making any efforts to provide such equal opportunity in education for its students. The 1973 decision states that:â€Å"In sum, to the extent that the Texas system of school financing results in unequal expenditures between children who happen to reside in different districts, we cannot say that such disparities are the product of a system that is so irrational as to be invidiously discriminatory.Texas has acknowledged its shortcomings and has persistently endeavored â₠¬â€œ not without some success – to ameliorate the differences in levels of expenditures without sacrificing the benefits of local participation. â€Å"Juliet brings her tragic end upon herself, through the disloyalty and disobedience to her family† How far do you agree? â€Å"Madam, I am here. What is your will? † Juliet’s demise comes to pass as a direct result of failing to follow the wishes of her family. This is not true. Juliet died because of loyalty to the prescripts of her heart. Our first indication of this is the instant attraction between Juliet and Romeo. Juliet was also willing to ignore the blood feud between the Capulets and Montagues in order to follow the prescripts of her heart. Juliet was willing to defy her father’s wishes for her to marry Paris. Finally and most importantly, Juliet died because of unbearable grief. Juliet and Romeo were instantly attracted to one another. Love at first glance is not unusual, but its repercussions can be devastating – as John Clare wrote: My heart had left its dwelling place And can return no more. When Romeo and Juliet spoke to each other at the Capulet ball they instantly knew what the appropriate thing was to say, and when to say it: â€Å"Thus from my lips, by thine, my sin is purg’d. † Juliet replies, â€Å"Then have my lips the sin that they have took. † The language used in these quotes worked well because of the metaphors that were used in each one. They spoke to one another as though they had known each other for years. It was very obvious at that stage that Juliet had fallen in love. Shakespeare presented them with the idea of love because they spoke in a sonnet to each other, â€Å"My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. † This was when Romeo was speaking to Juliet and it showed us how instantly both himself and Juliet had fallen for each other. Although, when they realised who each other was, they were extremely shocked, â€Å"Is she a Capulet? O dear account! † Romeo just could not believe what he had heard. When Juliet heard that Romeo was a Montague she did not understand why she had fallen for someone, who was an enemy to her family’s name, â€Å"My only love sprung from my only hate! † Juliet could not believe that her first love had turned out to be a Montague. It is clearly evident then that Juliet was following the prescripts of her heart and this is what brought about the untimely and tragic end to her life. Juliet was still willing to ignore the blood feud between the two families when she found out that Romeo was a Montague. Juliet seemed distraught after hearing it, this did not stop Romeo and Juliet continuing with their secret love affair. This definitely suggested that they were both truly in love with each other, by Juliet not realising the consequences that happens if she was to continue to love Romeo; â€Å"Thou art thy self, though not a Montague. O be some other name! What’s Montague? † Juliet felt that a name was just a name and not what your true personality was inside. Romeo replied, â€Å"My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself because it is an enemy to thee. † Romeo also did not care in what his family name was because it was as far as he’s concerned, an enemy name to the Capulet household and to Juliet, the woman he loved. By Juliet still willing to follow her heart even though there were blood feuds between her own family and the Montagues, this shows us that she was just following the prescripts of her heart. Juliet carried on her love affair with Romeo and was very willing to defy her own father, â€Å"Deny thy father and refuse thy name:† We can see that Juliet was willing to give up her father’s name all for the love of her beloved Romeo. â€Å"My ears have yet not drunk a hundred words of thy tongue’s uttering, yet I know the sound. Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague? † Juliet just could not believe that the words spoken by Romeo were actually coming from the mouth of a Montague. Juliet knows that it is Romeo even by the very faint uttering of his words. Juliet seemed to not mind and told Romeo to climb the walls to be with her although they were hard to climb and her kinsmen might of found him there, â€Å"The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, And the place death, considering who thou art, If any of my kinsmen find thee here. † Juliet’s willingness to defy her father shows us that she was definitely following the prescripts of her heart. In the last scene of the play, Romeo killed himself by taking poison, â€Å"Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die. † Romeo had drunk to his beloved Juliet and dies of all the pain at the loss of Juliet. Juliet however, after discovering that Romeo had taken his life, decided that she wanted to die and be with her beloved, â€Å"Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end, O churl! Drunk all, and left no friendly drop to help me after? I will kiss thy lips. † Juliet kissed Romeo and thought it cruel that Romeo had not left any poison for her. She then reaches for his dagger, â€Å"Oh happy dagger, This is thy sheath; there rest, and let me die. † The love of the star crossed lovers was so intense that they were willing to sacrifice life itself in order to follow the prescripts of their heart.

Student Ph and Ph Meter Essay Student: Ph and Ph Meter Essay UNIT 4 scientific practical techniques 1 .PH Probe A PH probe also known as a PH meter is an electronic device used for measuring the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of a liquid (though special probes are sometimes used to measure the pH of semi-solid substances). A typical pH meter consists of a special measuring probe (a glass electrode) connected to an electronic meter that measures and displays a digital pH reading The glass electrodes must be calibrated using a two point method with the appropriate buffer standard. To perform a two point calibration two buffer solutions are required. These buffers should be based upon the normal measurement range that probe operates in. A probe used for measuring the pH of alkali solutions should use pH buffers 7.0 and 10.0. Likewise, a pH probe in an acidic solution should be calibrated with a 2.0 (or 4.0) and a 7.0 buffer solution. Why this instrument was selected? The pH probe was selected for analysis because it provides accurate (post calibration) pH readings that are digitally taken to 2dp’s, and as we were dealing with solutions of an unknown pH, it is important to know precisely what the pH of each was, as they may have been used in other experiments needing a specific Ph. The use of this respective piece of equipment allowed us to ensure our reading of the pH of 3 unknown solutions was accurate to 2 decimal places, The alternative method would be use of PH litmus papers Litmus papers Litmus is a water-soluble mixture of different dyes extracted from lichens, especially Roccella tinctoria. It is often absorbed onto filter paper to produce one of the oldest forms of pH indicator, used to test materials for acidity. How they are use: Blue litmus paper turns red under acidic conditions and red litmus paper turns blue under basic (i.e. alkaline) conditions, Evaluating and comparing the accuracy of the procedures Advantage of using a PH meter over Litmus papers The PH meter provides a digital reading to 2 decimal places while as the litmus paper gives a rough estimate whether the solution is acidic or alkaline not giving a specific value of levels of the acidity or alkalinity .
